Ghosthunting UK Members-Only Day Out to Avebury Stone Circles
Share
There’s something truly special about walking amongst the ancient stones of Avebury. As members of Ghosthunting UK, we’re always seeking out energy, stories, and connection – and our exclusive day out to this sacred site offered all of that and more. From history to mystery, nature to the supernatural, it was a day to remember.
Avebury Village, located in the lovely Wiltshire country side, holds one of the largest and oldest stone circles in Europe, believed to date back to around 2600 BCE. Unlike Stonehenge, Avebury’s stones encircle the entire village, with over 100 massive sarsen stones originally placed in a circular and oval pattern. The purpose of the monument remains unknown, but it is thought to have been a place of spiritual or ceremonial significance. Its sheer size and the effort required to create it reflect the importance of this place to those who came before us.
Being in a location like Avebury reminds us of the importance of reconnecting with nature. Modern life can often leave us feeling detached and distracted, but spending time among ancient stones, open fields, and wildlife allows us to slow down and re-centre. These moments in nature are powerful, they ground us, elevate our senses, and create space for spiritual encounters and reflection.
Our members-only event wasn't just about the paranormal, it was also a chance to be social. Friendships were deepened, laughs were shared, and new connections formed. As always, when like-minded people gather, the energy lifts. The group shared stories, explored theories, and supported one another in tuning in to the unusual and the unseen.
The day wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the iconic Red Lion pub, which sits right in the middle of the stone circle, and is reportedly haunted itself, as Paula mentioned, and I quote, "There is ALWAYS a spirit sat at the end of the bar". Our meal there was more than just food and drink, it was an event in itself! The popular vote was Bakewell Tart for dessert with Sticky Toffee Pudding a close second! From curious encounters to conversations that took unexpected turns, the Red Lion never disappoints. There’s always an energy there, something unseen that seems to brush past you when you least expect it.
As the sun dipped behind the rolling hills, we ventured through the village, past old cottages and winding lanes, heading towards the church and back into the stone circle by night. The stars began to appear, and so did the sense of wonder. We paused often to stargaze and soak in the atmosphere, speaking quietly about upcoming investigations and events on the Ghosthunting UK calendar – it’s going to be an exciting few months ahead!
Perhaps most intriguing were the spiritual connections made during the day. Several of us clearly heard names captured on EVP, unmistakable words, Mandy is the master of the ETSES method! The number 15 repeatedly came through in our intuitive spirit communications, along with a Germanic theme. Later research revealed that Avebury’s stones were originally arranged in pairs, roughly 15 metres apart – and there are 100 of them. This seemingly random number had meaning, perhaps coincidence. Additionally, the Germanic connection may not be so far-fetched – some scholars believe early Germanic tribes travelled and traded across Britain, leaving behind echoes in language, custom, and even in sacred sites like Avebury.
This was more than a day out – it was an experience. And if the spirits were watching, they did made themselves known.
